The Story
In the summer of 2005, Annie O. Waterman ventured down to South America as an intern for World of Good. She was assigned to research fair trade policies, allowing her to visit numerous weaving cooperatives throughout Peru and Bolivia. As Annie was wandering the local markets, a beautiful embroidered table runner caught her eye. She asked where it was made, and it turned out that the shop keeper’s three daughters were the founders of the cooperative. A taxi was hailed, leading her to the workshop where all of the goods were made. Annie felt an immediate connection, as these women were genuine in their mission of creating opportunities for women who are victims of domestic violence. It was during this trip where her ideas to start a business developed and annie O. boutique was founded. Annie began by designing prototypes of belts and bags, as she was impressed by the womens’ skills and their professional manner. Her collection continues to be inspired by the vibrant floral embroidery which is seen throughout the Central highlands of Peru. To ensure ethical sourcing and working conditions, she visited the women’s homes, weaving workshops and local markets where all of the sheep’s wool and alpaca fiber is sold. Annie also works directly with the artisans, by calculating their time invested in each piece, thus making sure their fair trade wages are received.
annie O. boutique works with local materials and embroidery techniques to help sustain ancient craft traditions. When orders are placed, the women collect the yarn from the workshop and weave at home. This allows them to take care of their domestic obligations, while gaining financial independence. annie O. boutique strives to create a win win situation.. for the weavers and her clients, who get to enjoy these wearable works of art. annie O. boutique believes in the power of supporting women directly and how this can be a means to eradicate extreme poverty and a method to help them reach their full potential. Over the years, Annie has observed many positive developments and improvements in the town and this is truly the greatest gift.
